DATE TOPIC SPEAKER RESUME 12th JANUARY 2001: "PSYCHO-SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS" PROFESSOR MIKE DUDLEY, SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY, CENTRE FOR PSYCHO-THERAPEUTIC STUDIES. 15th JANUARY 2001: ASWIGS RESPONSE TO THE REFORM OF THE MENTAL HEALTH ACT. 22nd March 2001 "Mental Health Act Reform: AGM." Dave Sheppard, Mental Health Consultant. Over 60 people attended this over subscribed event in Runcorn Town Hall. Dave took time to reflect on positive aspects of the ASW's role. A full resume will follow soon. 5th MAY 2001 "National Association of ASW's? The Time is Right!" Robert McLean, ASWIG; Dave Sheppard; Ian Blackie ASW; Barbara Hatfield Lecturer and Alan Watson SSI. This free event in London was organised by ASWIG and sponsored by Dave Sheppard Associates. It would appear that the time is not right ! This event had to be cancelled due to a very poor response from area's outside the ASWIG region. ASWIG have offered to provide support to regions that may be interested in forming ASW interest groups, contact us by e-mail. 10th MAY 2001 "Legal Update & Question Time." Peter Edwards Solicitor 86 ASW's attended this event at Ashworth Conference Centre to be informed of some of the up-dates that will effect ASW's practice. It was an extremely informative session! One of the questions ASW's left with was What are our legal departments doing to update us? 6th JULY 2001 "Does The ASW Role Compound Institutional Racism ?" Errol Francis with workshop facilitators: Yashi Shah, Loretta Fuller, Bob Knowles, Ron Persaud & Bernie McLinden. Errol Francis opened this years annual conference with a very thought provoking keynote speech that left the 65+ ASW 's with plenty to reflect upon. The workshops were very well received and had to be interrupted to stop for coffee! These included, Contrasting Models of Assessment- Loretta Fuller; Culture in the Assessment Process- Yashi Shah; What would you do if you lived next door ? - Bob Knowles; What is good practice- Challenging "Institutional Racism"- Berni McLinden & Reflective practice from a psychodynamic perspective- Jo Lynton. The feedback was extremely positive and our thanks go to all who contributed to the day. 11th October 2001 "Detained", SSI Report Feb 2001. Alan Watson, Social Services Inspectorate. Over 100 hundred ASW's attended this workshop in Stretford. Alan's presentation was very interesting and informative. It gave ASW's the opportunity to examine the SSI's report that is very positive towards the role that ASW's play in the Mental Health system. Please Click on, "Detained" for link to the document.
